What

ArgConverter::CreateJsWrapper only cached prototypes for JS-extended classes (ClassPrototypes). Every other native object returned to JS rebuilt its prototype on each wrap:

  • objc_getClass(meta->name())
  • the constructor template lookup
  • GetFunction
  • a new "prototype" V8 string and a property Get

Without extra protocols the constructor template is cached per meta, so its prototype never changes. MetaInstancePrototypes keeps it per meta; a wrap with no extra protocols now goes straight to SetPrototype. Wraps with extra protocols take the existing path.

Behaviour change: native constructor prototypes are read-only

The cache is only correct if C.prototype cannot be replaced, so interface and protocol constructor templates now call ReadOnlyPrototype(), as struct constructors already do since #499. Adding members to a native prototype still works; replacing it does not:

Before After
"use strict"; NSUUID.prototype = p succeeds throws TypeError
NSUUID.prototype = p (sloppy) succeeds ignored
NSUUID.prototype.foo = ... works works

Before, the replacement succeeded but only some instances saw it:

After NSUUID.prototype = p Gets p
new NSUUID() yes
NSUUID.UUID() (wrapped by CreateJsWrapper) yes
NSUUID.alloc() no, keeps the snapshot in Caches::Prototypes

With the cache and a writable prototype, NSUUID.UUID() would have kept the old prototype too, which is the case CodeRabbit flagged. Making the assignment fail keeps every path on the same prototype. TypeScript extends and extend() only read the base prototype, and nothing in the runtime or TestRunner assigns one.

Both tables were checked on the simulator with a probe spec, on the parent commit and on this branch.

Measurements

iPhone 17 Pro simulator, xplat-benchmarks NativeScript app, size M, 5 interleaved rounds. Both builds come from this branch, with and without the cache. attached is the mount phase up to the views being attached, B/A:

Scenario attached
text-flow 0.97
flex-wrap-tiles 0.98
grid-dashboard 0.98
styled-cards 0.99
tree-fanout 0.99

Four of five rounds went the same way; one round was noisy in both directions. In a sampled profile of that app, this lookup chain was about 40% of CreateJsWrapper. ReadOnlyPrototype() only runs when a constructor template is created, so it does not affect the wrap path.

Testing

  • TestRunner on an iPhone 17 Pro simulator (iOS 26.4): 1836 specs, 0 failures, 11 skipped.
  • New ApiTests.js spec: NSMutableArray.prototype is not writable, a strict-mode assignment throws, and a wrapped native instance still gets that prototype and passes instanceof. It restores the prototype afterwards, so a regression fails this spec alone and not every later array test.
  • Simulator builds of NativeScript.framework swapped into the benchmark app; every benchmark round ran to completion.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance Improvements
    • Reusing cached prototypes can make repeated creation of native object wrappers more efficient.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Native class and protocol prototypes can no longer be replaced, helping ensure native arrays retain their expected type and behavior. Strict-mode attempts to replace a protected prototype now throw an error.

CreateJsWrapper only had a prototype cache for JS-extended classes
(ClassPrototypes). Every other native object returned to JS rebuilt its
prototype on each wrap: objc_getClass(meta->name()), the constructor
template lookup, GetFunction, a new "prototype" string and a property Get.

Without extra protocols the constructor template is cached per meta, so
its prototype is fixed. MetaInstancePrototypes keeps it per meta and the
wrap goes straight to SetPrototype.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Constructor templates now mark prototypes read-only. CreateJsWrapper reuses cached prototypes when no additional protocols are requested. Caches stores and clears those prototypes, and a test checks prototype immutability and array behavior.

Changes: Metadata Prototype Reuse

Layer / File(s) Summary
Read-only constructor prototypes
NativeScript/runtime/MetadataBuilder.mm, TestRunner/app/tests/ApiTests.js
Constructor templates mark prototypes read-only. The test checks the property descriptor, strict-mode reassignment, and prototype identity and instanceof behavior for a capacity-created array.
Prototype cache flow
NativeScript/runtime/Caches.h, NativeScript/runtime/ArgConverter.mm, NativeScript/runtime/Caches.cpp
Caches stores persistent prototypes by metadata and clears the map during destruction. CreateJsWrapper checks the cache when no additional protocols are requested and caches the prototype on a miss. Otherwise, it obtains the prototype from the initialized constructor without caching it.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep the cached prototype in sync with the constructor.

After one wrapper populates this cache, JavaScript can replace C.prototype with another object. A later native object with the same metadata then receives the old prototype, so it misses methods on the replacement and fails instanceof C. The previous path read the constructor’s current prototype for each wrap. The constructor template does not make that property read-only. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Read the current constructor prototype on each wrap, or invalidate the cache when it changes.

Update the MetaInstancePrototypes cached-prototype path so each wrap uses the
constructor’s current prototype, or ensure the cached entry is invalidated
whenever that prototype changes. Preserve the existing behavior for constructors
whose prototype has not changed.

MetaInstancePrototypes caches a native constructor's prototype per meta,
which is only correct if C.prototype cannot be replaced. Interface and
protocol constructor templates now call ReadOnlyPrototype(), as struct
constructors already do. Adding members still works; a strict-mode
assignment throws and a sloppy one is ignored.

Before, the assignment succeeded but only objects wrapped by
CreateJsWrapper saw it; alloc() kept the snapshot in Caches::Prototypes.
