Rationale for this change
Currently, the slicing constructors for
Buffer(src/arrow/buffer.h) andMutableBuffer(src/arrow/buffer.cc) unconditionally addoffsetto the parent buffer's pointer/address. When slicing a null-backed buffer whereparent->data_isnullptrorparent->mutable_address()is0with a non-zerooffset, this performs undefined pointer arithmetic on a null pointer (producing a corrupt non-null address0x0 + offset) and triggersclang-analyzer-core.NullPointerArithminclang-tidy:What changes are included in this PR?
Buffer's slice constructor insrc/arrow/buffer.hagainst nullparent->data_before addingoffset.MutableBuffer's slice constructor insrc/arrow/buffer.ccusingparent->mutable_address()(preserving non-CPU device compatibility from ARROW-2447) and performing integer addition before casting when non-zero.TestBuffer.SliceNullBufferinsrc/arrow/buffer_test.cc.Are these changes tested?
Yes, added
TestBuffer.SliceNullBufferinarrow-buffer-test(which fails on unpatchedmainwheresliced->data()evaluates to0x8instead ofnullptr, and passes with this fix) and verified thatclang-tidyno longer emitsclang-analyzer-core.NullPointerArithm.Are there any user-facing changes?
No.
