Replaces astral-sh/setup-uv with jdx/mise-action in every workflow that installs uv. CI now runs the uv version in mise.lock, which is the version that local development uses. This replaces the version: latest-known approach from STF-1497.

  • install_args installs only uv, not the other tools in mise.toml.
  • The dev group and CI use tox-uv-bare in place of tox-uv. tox-uv installs its own uv from PyPI. tox-uv-bare uses the uv on PATH, so tox also runs the mise uv. CI runs tox with uvx.
  • The release workflow sets cache: false. zizmor's cache-poisoning audit flags mise-action when its cache is on, as it did for setup-uv.
  • Adds uv 0.13.7 to mise.toml and mise.lock. The wheel builds use cibuildwheel and do not change.
  • Dependabot does not update mise.lock (Feature request: mise dependabot/dependabot-core#12320). To update uv, run mise upgrade uv and commit mise.lock.
  • The test jobs no longer cache uv's package cache. setup-uv cached it by default.

@oschwald oschwald changed the title Use the latest known uv version in CI Install uv with mise in CI Nov 5, 2026
Replace astral-sh/setup-uv with jdx/mise-action. CI now runs the uv
version in mise.lock, which is the version that local development uses.

The release workflow disables the mise cache, as it did for the
setup-uv cache (zizmor cache-poisoning).

Dependabot does not update mise.lock. To update uv, run
`mise upgrade uv` and commit mise.lock.

Pinning uv in mise.lock does not pin the uv that runs the tests: uv tool install tox --with tox-uv installs the newest uv from PyPI as a tox-uv dependency, and tox-uv uses that binary to create test venvs, run uv sync (uv-venv-lock-runner) and find managed Pythons.

The CI log shows + uv==0.13.7 only because 0.13.7 is the current PyPI release. When uv 0.13.8 ships, the tox test envs run 0.13.8, mise.lock still says 0.13.7, and local uv run tox (dev-bin/release.sh:88) uses 0.13.4 from uv.lock. The commit says 'CI now runs the uv version in mise.lock, which is the version that local development uses'. That is false for the main test step, so a uv regression can show up in CI but not locally, or the reverse. Fix: use --with tox-uv-bare, which uses the uv on PATH, or set TOX_UV_PATH=uv.

From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Fixed in 4acec40. The dev group and CI now use tox-uv-bare in place of tox-uv, so tox uses the uv on PATH, which is the mise uv. uv.lock no longer has the uv package from PyPI.

The tool bin PATH fix (uv tool dir --bin >> "$GITHUB_PATH") went into test.yml only. This workflow installs tox the same way but depends on the runner image already having ~/.local/bin on PATH.

It passes today because the ubuntu and macos-latest images include ~/.local/bin (the macOS log shows /Users/runner/.local/bin). If Windows is added to this matrix (line 17 says it is excluded only 'currently'), or an image PATH changes, tox run fails with command not found. setup-uv used to handle this for both workflows.

mise-action is used without version: in all five workflows, so the mise binary floats. On a cache miss each job looks up the version in mise.jdx.dev/releases.tsv, and cached mise versions can differ by platform for up to 30 days.

An outage at mise.jdx.dev, or a mise release that changes lockfile or --locked handling, breaks every CI job with no repo change. The lock already mixes two formats (lychee entries have no url_api/provenance, uv entries do), which shows the format depends on the mise version. Pinning version: (optionally with sha256:) makes this reproducible and removes the extra service.

Switching from setup-uv drops the uv package cache. setup-uv's enable-cache: auto saved and restored UV_CACHE_DIR on GitHub-hosted runners, and tox-uv's uv also used that cache.

Each of the 28 test.yml jobs, 15 test-libmaxminddb jobs and 3 single jobs now downloads every wheel/sdist and Python build again. Each push to a PR branch runs them twice (push and pull_request triggers). That makes CI slower and more exposed to PyPI/GitHub download failures. Cheaper options: keep setup-uv, or add actions/cache on uv cache dir keyed on uv.lock.

The GITHUB_PATH line runs on every OS although its comment says only Windows needs it. GITHUB_PATH prepends, so on Linux and macOS ~/.local/bin now comes before mise's pinned uv directory in later steps.

If a uv exists in ~/.local/bin (from the runner image or an earlier uv tool install), it shadows the mise-pinned uv in the 'Install Python' step without any message. Guarding the line with if: runner.os == 'Windows', or appending instead of prepending, avoids changing the order on the other OSes.

The new comment explains the line by comparing it with the removed action ('mise-action, unlike setup-uv, ...') instead of stating the current constraint.

Once setup-uv is gone from the repo, the comparison means nothing to readers. It should say why the line exists: uv tool install puts tox in uv's tool bin directory, which is not on PATH on Windows runners.

This comment is about .github/workflows/links.yml line 31, which is outside the diff. The repo now has two ways to install one mise tool: links.yml uses install: false plus a mise install lychee run step, and the new steps use install_args: uv.

links.yml's manual install gets no automatic --locked checksum enforcement and never saves the mise cache (the log shows 'mise cache not found' and a fresh install on each run). Using install_args: lychee there would make the workflows consistent and give it both.

Removing setup-uv also removes its Python problem matcher. setup-uv v10.3.2 has add-problem-matchers: true by default and registers a python.json matcher, which turns Python tracebacks into GitHub annotations. mise-action does not register a matcher.

A pytest failure or traceback in the test jobs no longer shows as an annotation on the PR's changed lines or in the run summary. Reviewers must open the raw log to find the file and line that failed.

From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Not adding a problem matcher. setup-uv's python.json matcher matches only a File "...", line N line directly followed by a raise Foo('...') line. pytest's default failure output does not have that shape, so the matcher rarely made annotations for these test jobs.

The shell: bash override and the GITHUB_PATH line exist only because tox is installed as a persistent uv tool and then called by name. A one-line uvx call needs neither.

uvx --python-preference only-managed --python 3.14 --with tox-uv-bare --with tox-gh tox run --skip-missing-interpreters false in the 'Run test suite' step does the same job with no PATH change and no separate install step. The same change in test-libmaxminddb.yml removes the need for a PATH fix there too.

Removing setup-uv also drops its Windows directory defaults. On Windows, setup-uv v10.3.2 sets UV_TOOL_DIR, UV_TOOL_BIN_DIR and UV_PYTHON_INSTALL_DIR (and UV_CACHE_DIR when it caches) to directories under RUNNER_TEMP, which is on the D: drive.

Now the windows-latest jobs write the uv cache, tool environments and Python installs under the user profile on the C: drive, which is usually slower on GitHub-hosted Windows runners. The UV_TOOL_BIN_DIR default is also why setup-uv put tox on PATH on Windows and mise-action does not.

tox-uv depends on the uv package from PyPI, and tox then uses that
bundled uv. In CI, this was the newest uv on PyPI, not the uv in
mise.lock. Locally, it was the uv in uv.lock.

tox-uv-bare does not bundle uv. It uses the uv on PATH, which is the
mise-installed uv in CI.
